Mnemonic: FEARS

Categories:

Mnemonics are an intrinsic part of learning in EMS. Let’s talk about FEARS!

FEARS

FEARS is used for patient refusals and stands for:

F: Full exam including vital signs.
E: Explain the risks.
A: Ask for help from the family or your supervisor.
R: Record the details.
S: Supportive attitude, try to convince and reassure.

The name of the game in patient refusals is to try and convince or gain compliance. Never forget that you are there to be an advocate for your patient. With that in mind center your communication around that. Be thorough and use FEARS along with good communication to successfully work your way through a patient refusal.
